Aberdeen's Best Kept Secret: Ripken Stadium's Luxury Hotel! - A Review (That’s Probably Too Honest)
Alright, alright, buckle up buttercups. I'm about to tell you about this… thing. This "luxury hotel" situated… inside… Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Maryland. Yes, that Ripken Stadium. The one where the IronBirds play. And yeah, it’s a lot. It's also, surprisingly, not a complete disaster. Let's dive in, shall we? Consider this my attempt to see if this place is worth the price of admission, for everyone, and if the reviews are honest or biased.
Accessibility (and My Existential Dread of Stairs):
Okay, starting with the basics. Accessibility – crucial for many, and a massive pain in the butt for me (my knees are… let's just say they're not fans of climbing things). Thankfully, wheelchair accessible is a HUGE check mark. The elevators are plentiful and the ramps are decent. That's a massive relief, seriously. I'm not sure about the full accessibility of the entire stadium, like if you're trying to get to a baseball game… but for the hotel itself? Solid.
But I will say, one thing that bugged me: Some of the areas, like the restaurants/lounges, were a bit… spread out. Not a marathon, but enough to make me think about that extra slice of pizza before getting there.
Internet… The Lifeline of Modern Existence:
Look, in this day and age, internet access is a basic human right. And thank goodness, free Wi-Fi in all rooms! A glorious, glorious sentence. The Wi-Fi in public areas seemed… okay. Nothing to write home about, but reliable enough to stream a decent amount of content. I did, however, try to use Internet [LAN] in my room and gave up after a while. A bit of a struggle, but the Wi-Fi saved the day. They also offer other Internet services, like printing which I didn't use, but it's there.
Cleanliness and Safety (Because Nobody Wants the Plague – or a Rusty Nail):
Okay, listen. I've spent enough nights in questionable hotels in my life to be deeply suspicious. So, the fact that they tout Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, and Rooms sanitized between stays? That's a BIG win. Plus, the staff seem to be very professional about the whole COVID situation. Staff trained in safety protocol – confirmed. They had Hand sanitizer EVERYWHERE, and even though I didn't use it, there were Individually-wrapped food options, so yes! They also had Hot water linen and laundry washing but I was too lazy to test that, so I can't confirm.
I have to admit a small panic attack when I first saw that they had Doctor/nurse on call. Does it mean I'm at risk? But good, maybe that's a reassurance. I'm not the most cautious traveler, so a First aid kit is always a good addition. They also have a Hygiene certification, so it's a good thing.
And hey, Rooms sanitized between stays – yay for that! The fact that the staff seemed genuinely invested in cleanliness was super reassuring. They even had a Safe dining setup, so I could breathe a little easier, plus Cashless payment service! Overall, I felt… surprisingly safe.
Dining, Drinking, and Snacking: The Fuel of Life (and Procrastination):
So, let's talk food. The hotel has restaurants. Plural! I'm not sure how many, but hey! They had multiple dining options! There's a Bar and a Poolside bar (more on that later). They have Coffee/tea in restaurant. I got a Bottle of water for free in my room, which is a nice touch.
The Breakfast [buffet] was what you’d expect – a little tired, but hey, it's a buffet. And being able to order Breakfast in room is always a plus when you feel like a total sloth. I tried the Asian breakfast one day… well, it was actually delicious! They also offer Buffet in restaurant to make it easier on the customer, and also have Breakfast takeaway service. They have Coffee shop and Snack bar, which I didn't try. They do offer some form of Happy hour, which I missed.
There's also Room service [24-hour]. I caved and ordered a pizza at 2 AM. Don't judge. It was decent, considering the hour. And hey, they have Alternative meal arrangement, in case I was fussy about the pizza.
They also have Vegetarian restaurant and Asian cuisine in restaurant I didn't try. And they have A la carte in restaurant, and International cuisine in restaurant too. I should probably try those out.
The Desserts in restaurant were very tasty. I didn't eat at the Salad in restaurant, because I'm not a rabbit. And I didn't eat at the Soup in restaurant, either.
Things to Do (Besides Wondering If You’re Really in a Baseball Stadium):
Alright, here’s where it gets interesting. The hotel has a Swimming pool [outdoor]. And it’s a Pool with view. I was expecting a cramped little thing, but it was actually pretty nice. A pleasant surprise. You can also ways to relax in the hotel, for example Foot bath.
And for the wellness warrior, the Fitness center looked pretty decent. They have a Gym/fitness, which seemed to be good. Also, the Spa/sauna sounds… luxurious. I didn’t partake, but I’m now intrigued. They also have a Spa with Body scrub and Body wrap. Plus, they have Steamroom and Massage. Wow! I'm exhausted already!
Services and Conveniences (The Things You Didn’t Know You Needed):
Okay, let's do this lightning round. Air conditioning in public area - check. Audio-visual equipment for special events – yeah, probably a given, considering the stadium. Business facilities - there's a whole business center! Cash withdrawal - I think there's an ATM, but I didn't need it. Concierge - helpful. Contactless check-in/out - excellent! Convenience store - very convenient! Currency exchange - not that I saw. Daily housekeeping - definitely a plus! Doorman - yep. Dry cleaning - didn't use it. Elevator - yes, bless them! Essential condiments - I didn't check! Facilities for disabled guests - again, absolutely. Food delivery - yes, but I didn't need it. Gift/souvenir shop - yes, for your IronBirds swag needs. Indoor venue for special events - of course. Invoice provided - check. Ironing service - check. Laundry service - check. Luggage storage - check. Meeting/banquet facilities - yes, apparently meetings are a big thing here. Meetings - confirmed. Meeting stationery - probably. On-site event hosting - yup. Outdoor venue for special events - duh. Projector/LED display - most likely. Safety deposit boxes - check. Seminars - I didn't see one. Shrine - LOL, no. Smoking area - yes, because apparently, people still do that. Terrace - yes, lovely. Wi-Fi for special events - yes, of course. Xerox/fax in business center - likely.
For the Kids (Because You Can’t Escape Them):
They have Babysitting service, which I didn't need. They're Family/child friendly, so that's good to know. They offer Kids meal. They also have Kids facilities which is amazing!
Access (Security, Security, Security):
CCTV in common areas and CCTV outside property - yep, cameras everywhere. Check-in/out [express] - fast. Check-in/out [private] - very cool. Couple's room - I didn't have one. Exterior corridor - yes, which I liked. Fire extinguisher - good. Front desk [24-hour] - always a plus. Hotel chain - yes. Non-smoking rooms - thank goodness. Pets allowed unavailable (I don’t think I’ve seen anyone that has pets here). Proposal spot - probably the baseball field, am I right? Room decorations - nothing special. Safety/security feature - it's there. Security [24-hour] - confirmed. Smoke alarms - also confirmed. Soundproof rooms - not fully soundproofed.
Getting Around (Because You Probably Want to Get Out of There Sometimes):
They have Airport transfer, which

Alright, buckle up buttercups, 'cause this isn't your grandma's itinerary. We are going on a chaotic, glorious, possibly slightly tipsy adventure in and around the Residence Inn Aberdeen at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Maryland. And trust me, after this, you might need the complimentary breakfast. Here we go:
Day 1: Arrival and the Great Ripken Stadium Conundrum (AKA, "Is it actually a baseball field?")
14:00 (ish) - Arrival and Immediate Regret/Relief: So, the trusty GPS led us here. "Ripken Stadium," it promised. "Baseball! America!" The Residence Inn sign feels…well, it feels very much like a Residence Inn. Clean, efficient, vaguely corporate. My first reaction? "Thank God there's a Starbucks nearby" (because, obviously). Second reaction? "Where. Is. The. Baseball?" Is it actually the stadium? Or just some themed parking lot? (Spoiler alert: it's next door and, yes, it's a real baseball field.) Unpacked, dropped my bag, and took a moment to soak in the… beige serenity of the room. It's fine. It has AC. That's a win in Maryland humidity.
15:00 - Scouting Mission: The Ripken Stadium Spectacle Unleashed: Alright, time to go and see. The baseball field. My inner child is tingling. The stadium gleams in the sun, promising (hopefully) a game (that evening). Walked over, saw it had the Ripken name all over it. The baseball stadium, it's actually kind of, ahem, impressive? (I'm not a huge sports guy, but, yeah). I spent a good 10 minutes wandering around the outside, peeking through fences. Trying to decide if I even wanted to engage, before the emotional rollercoaster of the stadium became real.
16:00 - Crisis Averted: Pre-Game Snack and Beverage Acquisition: Look, I need sustenance. And possibly some calming beverages. There's a random, but welcome, shopping center right across the street, I walked in, wandering. Discovered a small store, got some (and they had a decent beer selection!). Back to the room to chill.
18:00 - The Game…or the Attempt Thereof: (This is where things get real… and maybe a little messy.) Figuring out how to actually go to the game. Ticket situation? Parking? Concessions? (Important. Very important.) Realized I didn't really know anything about baseball. But hey, I was there, right? The stadium was actually pretty full!
Emotional Rollercoaster: The First Inning: Okay, I tried to understand the rules. The announcers' constant drone, the guy next to me kept explaining things, the people cheering, the smells of hot dogs and beer… It was sensory overload in the best way. Even I found myself shouting, "C'mon, batter! Swing!" I don't even like baseball! (But I was totally into it.)
The Concession Stand Conundrum: Okay, hot dogs, maybe some nachos, maybe some (more) beer. But the lines! The decisions! The options! It was an experience in itself. And, somehow, I ended up with a pretzel the size of my face. Worth it.
The Bottoming out: The game went on for how long? Three hours? Four? I was tired, sunburned, and my brain felt like it was running a marathon… of baseball statistics I barely understood. But I loved every moment.
21:00 - Post-Game Recovery (and Debrief): Back to the hotel, a little sun-kissed, very tired, and buzzing with… well, everything. My brain was still replaying all the moments. Hot shower, collapse on the bed, and reflecting on, the sheer joy of being wildly, unexpectedly swept up in the American experience. The whole experience was so great, I'd do it again.
Day 2: Exploring the (Possible) Charm of Aberdeen (and the Quest for Decent Coffee)
08:00 - The Breakfast Gauntlet: Free breakfast, baby! The buffet's laid out, and there is the usual. The key is to go when its relatively empty and not too picked over, like the wolves are circling. Grabbed some eggs and fruit. It was… fine. Fuel for the morning's adventures.
09:00 - A Mission to find some Coffee: I need a serious caffeine boost. I went hunting for the best coffee in Aberdeen. This search took me, well, around Aberdeen itself. A few little cafes offered decent brews. Victory!
10:00 - Aberdeen's Hidden Charms (or Lack Thereof): Okay, let’s be honest, Aberdeen is no Paris. But, it has charm. Or, at least, little pockets of potential. I went for a drive. Saw a few houses. The park. The main street. (I may have got a little lost. More than once.) Found a cute little shop. (It wasn't fancy. But it had character.)
12:00 - Lunch Adventure: Picked a random place that looked okay, found a nice deli. Grabbed a sandwich at a local deli. Pretty tasty. Didn't realize how hungry I was.
13:00 - Pool Time (or the Hotel's Attempt at Leisure): The hotel has a pool! (Standard hotel pool. Clean, chlorinated.) Spent the afternoon swimming. Read a book. Basically, doing next to, nothing. It was bliss.
17:00 - The Quest for the One Last Adventure (Before Reality Sets In): I may have been planning out the drive back home. But still, I need, one more adventure before I leave.
19:00 - Farewell Dinner: I went out for one last meal. Reflecting on the trip. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. Was it memorable? Hell, yes.
20:00 - Packing, Packing, Packing… (and the End of the Trip): Yeah, that's about it. Time to go home. Already thinking about the next adventure. This trip wasn't the best. It was the perfect trip.
Final Thoughts:
So there you have it. A messy, imperfect, and hopefully entertaining glimpse into my Aberdeen, Maryland, escapade. It wasn't about ticking boxes or pristine itineraries. It was about embracing the chaos, finding joy in the unexpected, and maybe, just maybe, discovering a little bit of myself. And, of course, the importance of a good cup of coffee.
